Teaching in the clinical setting demands a unique blend of medical expertise, communication, and mentorship.
The Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award recognizes resident and fellow physicians at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the Des Moines Campus who excel in integrating education into patient care. These individuals inspire and educate a wide range of learners—including medical students, peers, faculty, clinical staff, patients, and families—through exemplary teaching practices. Nominations for this award may be submitted by medical students, resident and fellow physicians, faculty physicians, and clinical staff such as nurses, pharmacists, and therapists. Nominees are distinguished by their ability to foster a positive learning environment through excellent communication, focused feedback, clear expectations, respect for learners, collaborative decision-making, and a supportive, nonjudgmental approach to teaching.
