Additional Benefits
GI Bill
Residents and fellows who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces may be eligible for a broad plan of educational benefits including a monthly educational assistance allowance. The determination of eligibility and initial application for such benefits may be made through the Graduate Medical Education Office.
Computers and Software
House staff members are eligible to receive discounts for purchasing computers and certain software. Information regarding the on-line purchase of computers can be found on the University of Iowa’s ITS Computer Demo Center. Computer software is available through the Iowa Memorial Union Bookstore. Additional information regarding software available to University of Iowa faculty, staff and students can be found with Information Technology Services Software Central. UI Health Care’s Technology Solution Center provides remote access information to specific UI Health Care applications.
Retirement Savings
Resident and fellow physicians may qualify for a Voluntary Retirement Savings Program (VRSP), which is open to all house staff who receive earned compensation reportable in an IRS Form W2 and subject to federal and state withholding. As this annuity is supplemental, it has no matching funds from the University. Contributions can be pre-tax or post-tax and are paid by the house staff member. More information can be found on the UI Benefits Office website.
Reduced UI Tuition
Beginning the semester after the house staff member’s contract begins, house staff members, their spouses, and dependent children qualify for in-state tuition rates for courses taken at the University of Iowa. An application, along with a copy of the house staff’s signed contract, must be completed so the Registrar’s Office can determine eligibility. More information regarding residency classification can be found on the Office of the Registrar’s website.
